Not a shock to many, Paul Hobbs is regarded as an international visionary for his accomplishments in the winemaking world, recognized across the globe for forging new paths in the pursuit of excellence, stewardship of the land, and crafting amazing wines. Among his many projects (heard of Opus One, anybody?), Paul is the owner and winemaker for Sebastopol, California based wineries, as well as international partner in Argentina, France, and Armenia exceptional wineries. One of these wineries is Viña Cobos in Mendoza, Argentina, and one of its wines, Cocodriilo, blew us away during Saturday's tasting.

A Bordeaux blend (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malberc, 10% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cab Franc), this wine stood out to us because of the exceptional balance, amazing flavor and complexity, and tremendous value. The nose displays a combination of red and black currant, mulberry, licorice, cedar, and spices.

On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich black and red currants, subtle dark chocolate, vanilla, dried herbs and spices. Tannins are very fine and silky, giving the wine the backbone without making it overbearing. The finish is long and lingering, with subtle chocolate, vanilla, tobacco leaf, cedar, licorice and cassis aftertaste that makes you want to reach for another sip.

Pairs beautifully with grilled meats and charcuterie. There's also a 93 point score by James Suckling, 91 point score by Robert Parker, a 90 Wine Spectator score, and a Silver win at the International Wine Challenge of 2018 - but hey, it's got Paul Hobbs' name on it, so it's sort of expected.
